The Final Count Down!

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Tuesday, March 29, 2011

As I write this, its 6:56am on Tuesday, March 29th. We are set to depart Roatan on Friday, April 1st, (and no, this is not an April fools joke). Our bedroom is scattered with half packed suitcases and last minute storage boxes. We're busily running through our checklists, making sure that all is in order for our return trip to the States. In the midst of it all, I'm prepping sermons, finalizing details with car insurance companies, confirming appointments in 12 different states and grouping o...

Prayer Needed

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Wednesday, March 2, 2011

I posted the above video a few weeks ago, but I felt it was important to post it again. You see...we need prayer! God has been blessing the ministry of rChurch quite a bit in the past year. In the first 2 months of 2011 alone we have outgrown our current space. For the past 2 years, we have been meeting at a small conference room at the Mayan Princess Hotel. It has been great, but now we can't fit another chair, or another person. It's time to expand!

We've kicked around the idea of hosting 2 ...

Rain, Rain, Rain

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Wednesday, March 2, 2011

A few weeks ago, the island of Roatan played host to one of the heaviest rain storms I have ever seen. Initial reports said that we received 20 inches of rain in less than 48 hours. My 15,000 gallon cistern went from empty to overflowing in less than 1 day. It was intense.

When it rains like that, we tend to stay close to home. This time was no exception. Roads washed out in West Bay. Full hillsides came down. Coxen Hole became a public swimming pool. People became trapped in West End as hole...

My Favorite Things

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Wednesday, March 2, 2011
Just thought I'd share with you one of my favorite things. I discovered "Playing for Change" several years ago and love to listen to their music as often as I am able. If you get a minute, listen to this rendition of "Stand By Me" and maybe you'll join me in saying that this is one your favorite things!

GO PACKERS!!!!!

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Monday, February 7, 2011
So this was our third Superbowl here on the island. This year was a doozy!!!! What a game! I was anxious to see Green Bay tear down those devils from Pittsburgh. (After the Seahawks humiliating defeat to the Steelers in Superbowl 40, I can never in good conscience root for that team.) Our friends from French Harbor invited us out to the Blue Parrot in Sandy Bay to enjoy the festivities. We gathered together with a full house of people sporting the green and yellow, (there were a few people ...

Race Days in Roatan

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Monday, February 7, 2011
Roatan is home to an annual Olympic qualifying triathlon. This year we had contestants from all over the globe gather on the beaches of West Bay to take on this beast of a race. In addition to the Olympic athletes we had several individuals and teams from the island compete. It was an amazing day! I was so proud of all of our local competitors and the amazing job they all did.

We had visiting athletes representing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Our friends Alex and Laura ran the race...

rChurch.tv in 2011

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Monday, February 7, 2011
2011 has just gotten underway, but already we are experiencing some radical growth here on the island. We've reached a tipping point. We have no more space, and no more chairs. We need to do something fast!!!! We've been toying with the idea of moving to 2 services, but we've also been on the lookout for a new facility. West Bay Beach is pretty crowded these days and there really isn't a lot of open and/or affordable space that we can move to. All that to say...we've been praying quite a bi...

Resolutions

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Tuesday, January 11, 2011

2011 and we find ourselves back in the month of January. While some of you may be examining snow falling onto your driveways, or ice building on your windshields, we're looking at sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80's. Yup...it's January in the Caribbean! This time of year we once again begin examining our lives, our jobs, our bodies, our goals and anything else we can think of that may be in need of a change. It's time again for resolutions and here in Roatan, we're not immune to th...

Saying Goodbye

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Roatan is a pretty amazing place. We have one of the top ten beaches in the world. We boast the second largest coral reef in the world. This time of year you couldn't ask for better temperatures. But one aspect about life here that almost no one loves is how often we must say goodbye. The life of the ex-pat on the island is transient at best. Every year, every month, ever week, people come and go at breakneck speeds. One of the young ladies in our youth group posted a Facebook status update o...

Fire in Helene

Posted by Jeremy Dyck on Monday, January 3, 2011

As many of you know, Melissa and I began our adventure in Roatan more than 13 years ago. Melissa first came to this island on a short term trip to Helene in 1996. I moved here to help build a medical and dental clinic with Alternative Missions in 1997. We bother returned for short term trips over the years and moved back to Helene in 2001. We have been involved in ministry in Helene for a very long time.

A couple of years ago, Alternative Missions turned over the operation of the ministry in ...
